The strongest muscle group of the anterior part is quadriceps, they consist of the rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis and vastus medialis. The main muscle group of the posterior part is the hamstrings; they consist of the biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitendinosus.
